Waldegrave Road is a clean, Scandinavian-inspired transformation of a terraced home in a Brighton conservation area, combining a rear extension, loft conversion, and garden room to create a calm and contemporary living environment. The design was driven by the client’s vision for a Scandinavian aesthetic, which aligned naturally with our approach to minimal, light-filled spaces. The plan prioritises openness and simplicity, allowing natural light to define the character of the home.
Externally, the extended outrigger and new loft space were carefully integrated to respect the historic context. Conservation constraints shaped the design, confining the extension to the width of the main house and the length of the existing outrigger, while the dormer was proportioned to reflect heritage sizes typical of the property’s era. The garden room provides a flexible studio workspace and garden storage within a limited footprint, finished in bold black timber cladding for a restrained yet confident presence.
Internally, the palette is pared back and natural, reinforcing the Scandinavian influence. Large rooflights, generous glazing, and bi-folding doors flood the home with daylight, creating a sense of calm and connection to the outdoors. Despite the conservation setting, planning was secured smoothly thanks to our experience and considered approach.
We acted as lead designer, delivering a refined transformation that balances simplicity with sensitivity, elevating everyday living in one of Brighton’s most characterful neighbourhoods.
“I’ve had the pleasure of working with Courtney on numerous projects, both personally and professionally, and he has consistently gone above and beyond my expectations. His attention to detail is second to none, and he brings a wealth of creative ideas that add real value to every stage of a build.
Courtney is always quick to respond, making the design and planning process smooth and efficient. On one occasion, during an extension, he even came to site personally to help deal with a particularly difficult neighbour – a gesture that speaks volumes about his dedication and professionalism.
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Courtney to anyone looking for a designer who combines skill, creativity, and a genuine commitment to his clients.”
